On Thursday 13 November, an elevator in Rome fell as a result of an accident. The CNA (National Association of Representatives of Small Businesses, Entrepreneurs and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Trade in Rome) published a guide for users to ensure the proper use and maintenance of elevators.
The article, published in the newspaper Cinque Quotidiano, reads as follows: An elevator falls.

ToggleCNA: Alarm goes off in elevators
Only 20% of the lifts comply with the new regulations. We attach the manual for correct operation:
A guide for users to ensure proper use and maintenance of elevators.
Following the incident this morning in Garbatella, CNA Rome is giving some advice to the Romans.
Many old lifts do not comply with regulations. In Italy there are more than 900,000 lifts in use: almost a third are more than 40 years old, and only a little less than 200,000 meet the modern safety criteria established by European regulations for new installations. Many lack safety devices, present only in systems installed after June 1999.
To be safe, the lift must be designed by qualified personnel to ensure the automatic operation of the safety devices in the event of a fault. Lifts must be regularly inspected by a qualified maintenance technician and every two years by an engineer from a competent body authorised by the State.
Manual for elevator safety:
To protect the safety of elevator users, we suggest that all owners, together with the facility's maintainer, carefully consider all possible risk factors that may cause accidents during use or during maintenance operations, scheduling in advance and having the necessary actions carried out to eliminate or at least reduce the risks.
Main risks and interventions to prevent accidents in an elevator:
- Entrust maintenance to a specialized company in compliance with legal requirements.
- Don't let anyone perform tasks that are the maintainer's responsibility.
- Suspend the operation of the elevator in the event of an accident and report it to the maintainer.
- Install a two-way voice dialer for access to a rescue center: this ensures that people trapped in the cabin are rescued quickly and in the best possible way.
- Install a precise leveling system on the floor to prevent users from tripping when entering or exiting the cabin if it is not properly leveled.
- Install devices to protect people during automatic door closing.
- Install doors on vacant cabins.
- Adapt hydraulic elevators to achieve the same level of safety that has been achieved with electric ones.
