ToggleElevator in the Colosseum in Rome
A new elevator was recently inaugurated at the Colosseum in Rome, allowing all visitors, including those with reduced mobility , to reach the top of the stands and enjoy one of the most impressive views in the world.
This elevator was put into operation during the month of June and was inaugurated with a concert in the centre of its arena, by the Italian Cinema Orchestra, performing the soundtrack of the film 'Gladiator' (2000).
The construction of the new panoramic elevator at the Colosseum thanks to Gladiator
Curiously, the idea of building an elevator came after a screening of this film inside the Colosseum itself in the presence of its star, Russell Crowe . This event was organized to raise funds in the fight against polio.
How the Colosseum elevator in Rome was installed
The construction of this panoramic lift, made of metal and glass, took five years and was carefully planned to blend in harmoniously with the site. No holes were drilled into the walls for its installation, but instead pressure-mounted anchor points were used, which allows it to be dismantled in the future if desired.
The elevator will allow all visitors , who numbered almost 7 million in 2022 alone, to access the second and third levels of the stands , although it is important to note that this panoramic elevator does not reach the most impressive area of the Colosseum, known as the "attic", which is a platform located at the highest part of the exterior facade of the building.
However, the director of the Archaeological Park, Alfonsina Russo, announced that an additional platform is being prepared that will connect the third level of the stands, where the elevator arrives, with the attic, to achieve full accessibility to the monument.
