Overall cost of an elevator: installation, maintenance and consumption

Hydraulic Fluid

In general, the electric elevator consumes a little less than the hydraulic one.

For this reason, the electric vehicle needs a less powerful motor, but consumes as much energy going downhill as going uphill. The hydraulic vehicle, on the other hand, needs a more powerful motor, but only consumes energy going uphill because it goes downhill thanks to the force of gravity . In other words, for each trip (going up and down) the electric vehicle will work harder than the hydraulic vehicle, and as a consequence its components will deteriorate sooner than those of a hydraulic vehicle .

Another element to take into account is that components submerged in fluid, as is the case with a hydraulic lift , have a longer lifespan. Therefore, an electric lift will need repairs and replacements sooner than a hydraulic lift, even if they have worked for the same amount of time and at the same rate.

If we compare the two elevator systems in a range of, for example, 8 stops, we will see that the electric elevator consumes a little less than the hydraulic one, but on the other hand the installation and maintenance of the electric one will be more expensive.

Installation, maintenance and consumption of an elevator The current trend towards reducing energy consumption and the need for higher safety standards makes us think about both aspects before choosing an option. As an example, let's look at several Nordic European countries that require the use of lights in cars during the day for greater safety, even though this entails an increase in energy consumption.

  1. An electric lift is less expensive than a hydraulic lift or elevator, as you point out in the text. It also represents a significant energy saving due to its energy-saving features such as changing lights or other systems. Although it requires more constant maintenance in the long run and with the new technologies and innovations in the lifting sector, I consider an electric lift to be much more efficient. Thanks for the contribution! Greetings!

    1. Hi Nuria, your statement is not entirely true for several reasons:
1.The installation cost of an electric elevator is higher than that of a hydraulic elevator.
      2. As indicated in the post, although the electric elevator consumes a little less, you have to take into account that it consumes when going up and down, the hydraulic one only when going up. In this way, consumption is equalized and there is less wear on its elements, which leads to lower repair costs.
      3. Since the date this post was written until now, new technologies have been incorporated into hydraulic elevators that have made them consume up to 40% less.
4.Changing the lights to LEDs, as you rightly point out, is common in all elevators.
For all these reasons and the great security it offers, it can be said that the hydraulic lift is the best option for the consumer.

  2. Good morning, my question is as follows:

How often is the oil changed in the hydraulic unit in a 05-stop home elevator?

    thank you

    1. Good morning,
The time to change the oil in a hydraulic lift depends on the use and the temperature at which it works.
After 16 years it is quite likely that it will need to be changed, however the definitive test would be to perform an analysis of the oil and check if it has lost properties. This would have to be assessed on a case-by-case basis, since the cost of this analysis could be higher than that of the oil itself.

  3. Hello, good afternoon. I need the steps to follow to install a hydraulic elevator in a new 6-story building. Could you help me? Thank you.
