ToggleSpain, the country in the world with the most elevators per person
According to a report by Credit Suisse , as reported by the American website Quartz , Spain is the country in the world with the most elevators and hoists per person, up to 19.8 per 1,000 inhabitants. Almost double the average of the European Union and seven times more than the United States.
Around 65% of the population lives in apartment blocks , which is why Spain is the world leader in the number of elevators.
Why are there so many elevators per person in Spain?
The explanation for our fondness for elevators dates back to the post-war period. The buildings, most of them in ruins or damaged, were replaced by apartment blocks during the 1950s and 1960s, so that they could accommodate the wave of internal immigration due to industrialization.
Sales soared thanks to new legislation, the Horizontal Property Law. Renting was replaced by sales and, since most properties were flats, elevators proliferated in the communities of neighbors, who wanted to make their buildings more comfortable and accessible.
What is the trend?
We are currently leaders and there may be more, because although the construction of new homes has decreased with the crisis, what has increased and will continue to do so is the number of homes that have been renovated, for example, to install an elevator. It is estimated that in our country there are still some 800,000 buildings that do not have an elevator.
