What is the difference between a forklift and an elevator?

Lift What do we mean by forklift?

A freight elevator is a large lift used to transport loads. It consists of a chassis that slides along two parallel rigid guides supported by a metal structure which is in turn anchored to the structure of the building.

There are two types of hydraulic lifts : those that move loads only, and those that transport both loads and people. The latter is considered a hydraulic lift , since it must comply with the EN81.2 standard for lifts. On the other hand, a lift that only transports loads is subject to the EN81.3 standard.

The difference between the two depends on the regulations they comply with, conditioning some of their elements when it comes to assembly and maintenance.

A hydraulic forklift is a safe vertical transport system as long as it meets a series of requirements, from the point of view of assembly, maintenance and use.

Difference between forklift and elevator

NOTE: From now on we refer to the hydraulic forklift for loads exclusively as “forklifts”.

Structure of a hydraulic forklift A forklift is composed of:

  • A supporting surface of the structure that must be horizontal and strong.
  • A chassis that must be perfectly anchored and level.
  • Two or more parallel rigid guides.
  • Conventional or telescopic pistons depending on the stroke. 2 or more pistons can be used depending on the maximum load of the installation.
  • A conventional or double central unit, depending on the route and characteristics of the installation .
  • The chassis is connected to the system that guides the movement of the forklift. This system must ensure the horizontal and vertical stability of the forklift at all times, and be designed to withstand the stresses caused by the operation of the emergency parachute. It must be taken into account that the parallelism of the guides is such that it does not allow the forklift to exit under any circumstances.

  1. Interesting article, forklifts are very useful for warehouse work, it is important to know the differences between a forklift and an elevator. Greetings!

    1. Good morning Jorge,
The distance that a hydraulic forklift can reach depends on the load it has to lift, but using a standard example of a load of 4,000 or 5,000 kg, it could reach up to 6 stops without any problem. In any case, if you have a specific case that you want us to calculate, you can contact us through our email: info@es.gmvgrupo.com

  2. Really useful information, this difference is not always explained and it is important to know this when choosing... since later we can have problems for not complying with the regulations. In our company we opted for mixed forklifts since they would be used for both people and goods.

  3. Hello Ruben:

Could you provide us with the name of your company so we can inform you about the characteristics of the elevator?

    Thank you,

    1. Hello Ivan, first of all, thank you for choosing us to carry out your enquiry. The difference between a freight elevator and a lift, as indicated in the article, lies in the regulations they comply with. A freight elevator is approved for use with loads but not with people, and a lift is only approved for use with people. You can find more information in EN 81-2.

  4. The difference is notable especially in terms of dimensions and weight resistance, since freight elevators usually support much more weight than a community elevator, for example, as well as car lifts or other types of heavy-duty lifting equipment. Today we have countless accessibility possibilities and solutions, making daily life and daily work much easier. Thank you for the information and best regards.
