Shock absorbers (Puffer in English) are an organ designed to serve as a deformable end-of-travel stop and consist of a fluid or spring braking system (or other equivalent device).

What is the function of shock absorbers in an elevator?

Elevators must be provided with buffers, to stop the car or the counterweight (in the case of an electric elevator ) if necessary. The buffers are usually located in the pit at the end of the car or counterweight travel. They can also be mounted on the underside of the car frame.

In this case, according to EN 81.1 regulations, they must hit the pit on a pedestal, one for each shock absorber, 0.50 m high to provide a protective space for the maintenance personnel who may be working in the pit to take shelter if necessary.

Types of shock absorbers

Shock absorbers can be of 3 types:

  • Elastic (rubber): these are made up of a rubber cylinder. They can be used when the speed of the cabin does not exceed 0.60 m/s. This type of shock absorber can be used in forklifts .
  • Spring-loaded: can be used when the cabin speed does not exceed 1.75 m/s.
  • Hydraulic: can be used in any case.

Spring shock absorbers are made of a wire or steel bar with a circular section, wound in a helical shape. To facilitate their attachment, the spring is welded to a base plate. These shock absorbers, also called energy storage shock absorbers, can be equipped with return shock absorbers.

Hydraulic shock absorbers consist of a hollow piston fitted to a cylinder that forms the shock absorber body. The cylinder contains a special oil, which enters the cylinder through holes of adjustable cross-section when the piston is lowered by an external load. The speed at which the piston will descend depends on the total cross-section of the holes. A spring that is compressed when the piston is lowered is responsible for returning it to its initial position once the force pressing on it ceases.

  1. I need to install two shock absorbers in the pit of a forklift to absorb an energy of 7 KJ each with a maximum speed of 10 m/s (free fall of 5.5 m). I would appreciate it if you could advise me on your products.
