New European Directive 2014/33/EU. Safer lifts

Description European Regulation 2014/33/EU

On April 20, 2016, the new directive 2014/33/EU came into force, which increases the safety of elevators through changes in the available technology as well as in the rules for the design, manufacture, distribution and assembly of elevators, placing special emphasis on safety and surveillance throughout their useful life.

What is the purpose of the new European Regulation 2014/33/EU?

The new directive 2014/33/EU aims to regulate the marketing of elevators, from their origin to their commissioning in all EU countries .

These changes are basically intended to "make it mandatory to guarantee the traceability of elevators and their safety components and to regulate the obligations of economic agents, namely, installers, manufacturers, importers and distributors, as well as the obligations of Conformity Assessment Bodies," according to the Spanish Federation of Elevators (Feeda).

Market surveillance of elevators and their components is now in the hands of regional administrations, which will be responsible for supervising participants in the construction chain such as designers, manufacturers and distributors.

Is it necessary to make changes to old elevators?

Feeda emphasizes that in the case of old elevators, it is not necessary to change the elevator, but it would be appropriate to incorporate new safety and energy efficiency measures , since in hydraulic elevators the cost of adaptation is not so significant, compared to the return in safety, ecology and energy efficiency.
