Tips for maintaining a hydraulic lift

maintenance of a hydraulic lift

The importance of elevator maintenance

Elevator maintenance is essential, and it is also essential for us as users, since elevator safety is a priority. When installing an elevator, one of the questions we often ask ourselves is: How much will it cost to maintain it?

How much does it cost to install, maintain or refurbish an elevator?

The cost of installing, maintaining or refurbishing an elevator depends on multiple variables, such as the number of trips it makes throughout the day, how many residents there are in the building, how many floors it has, whether it is a public or office building, its age, etc. An elevator in a building with 20 apartments and 15 trips per hour does not support the same as a public building where traffic rises to, for example, 100 trips per hour.

To achieve a longer product life in an installed elevator, it is necessary to maintain its components. This maintenance ensures optimal conditions for passenger safety.

How often should an elevator be serviced or inspected?

Depending on the general conditions of each installation (number of stops, traffic of people, type of building , etc.), the frequency of maintenance will be influenced. In general terms, GMV, as a manufacturer of hydraulic components, recommends carrying out two types of inspections:

General review of an elevator

Partial inspections, depending on the useful life and wear of the parts. GMV recommends inspections every 2 months, every year or every 5 years depending on the type of part.

Complete overhaul of an elevator

GMV recommends carrying out a complete review of your hydraulic installations every 5 years.

  1. I would like to know how often it would be advisable to perform maintenance on the elevator.
It is a three-story house. Each floor has three apartments.
The house was built in 2005

    Thank you

    1. Good morning Mª Castillo,

First of all, please excuse the delay in our response.

The elevator is a machine that transports people, so corrective and preventive maintenance is very important. In Spain, the lifting sector is one of the few in which, both manufacturers and lift operators, have a very high awareness of the responsibility to maintain a safe elevator fleet.

Inspections are carried out monthly by the lift operator. Inspections consist of lubricating the guides and checking and/or replacing different components based on periodicity tables, such as the condition of the traction cables/operation of the doors/security systems/traction equipment, etc.

This prevents possible incidents (such as situations in which the elevator stops working, which is undesirable for any user) and maintains the installation for many years.

We hope we have been able to help you.

      Greetings,

  2. We currently have a problem with an indirect attack hydraulic elevator, the problem is as follows:
When the equipment makes more than 5 trips it begins to lose balance between 10mm and 25mm, we change the valve block, check the hoses, relief valves, check valve and in none of these systems there are oil leaks. The system pressure is 20 bars. Could the problem be occurring in the internal part of the piston? What other option can we check?

    1. Hello Adolfo!

Based on what you've told us, try closing the stopcock. If the pressure remains the same, then the unit does not have any leaks. Therefore, it could be a problem with other components other than GMV.

  3. MY ELEVATOR IS FROM A BASEMENT TO THE FIRST FLOOR BUT IT IS NOT USED MUCH, ALMOST INCOMPLETELY, HOW OFTEN WOULD IT BE MAINTAINED?

  4. Hello,

We have a car lift and a contract with the original assembler who still does the maintenance, this was almost 15 years ago, and as far as we know he has never changed the oil.

Over the years, we have noticed that there is a lot of neglect, and just this last year, after a meeting with him in which he did not tell us anything, a week later, he tells us that the oil needs to be changed.

After the meeting in which he didn't tell us anything at all, he told us that the oil needs to be changed, 700 litres that he says there are in the tank, almost 4,000 euros, it's normal that he has never changed it... And now after the complaints he tells us that it's all the oil's fault?
He is the one who set up the car lift and who has always maintained it.

    Thanks for everything,
    Manoli

  5. Good morning, I am Jose from Bell Ville, Cordoba. I am a doorman and there is an elevator and the man who does maintenance on it does not have time to come. That is why I would like to know if it is possible to take a course or for you to tell me the most important thing in maintenance. Thank you very much and excuse my inconvenience. Cell 03537 330554

    1. Good morning Jose,

First of all, we would like to thank you for contacting us to resolve your concern. In response to your email, we would like to tell you that the elevator maintenance must be carried out by an elevator company. Our advice is that you contact the company that the community of neighbors has contracted for this work and tell them your needs.

      Greetings,

    1. Good morning,
Following your request, we have revised the functionality of the download link for the table that appears at the end of the article, so you can now download the information you need.

      Greetings,

  6. Excuse me, how much oil needs to be changed or put in an elevator? It's a small one, and it travels between three floors.

    1. First of all, we would like to thank you for your enquiry. The quantity of oil required for a hydraulic lift depends on the size of the central unit, for example, for a 3-stop single-family lift, approximately 25 l would be required. Please note that we cannot answer your question exactly without knowing which central unit you have in your facility, so this information should be taken as a guide.

  7. Good afternoon, my question is as follows:

How often is the oil changed in the hydraulic unit for an elevator with a capacity of 5 stops?

    Thank you

  8. Hello, we have a hydraulic elevator in a four-story community with eight neighbors and for two summers it has stopped in the afternoon and they tell us it is because it is overheating. They have changed the oil because they say it has been running for seven years and it is still the same and they do not give us a solution. Could you tell me why this could happen?

    1. Hello Angelo,
First of all, thank you for trusting us. Regarding your question about when the oil in a hydraulic lift should be changed, taking as a reference a residential building with normal traffic, the oil should be replaced every 10 years. We recommend HV-46 type oil (no matter the brand).

  9. Good afternoon,

Requesting information regarding the maintenance of a hydraulic elevator. We are located in the offices of Caminos y Puentes Federales at San Francisco Avenue No. 217, Col. Lomas de San Francisco in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

Hoping to receive your prompt response, I send my best regards.

  10. How often is it necessary to change the hydraulic oil in a three-story community with said neighbors? The elevator works very well.

  11. Hello. How often do you need to change the oil in a hydraulic car lift that goes down one floor to a garage? The lift is 13 years old.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. First of all, thank you very much for taking us into account when answering your question. GMV, as a manufacturer, recommends that you contact your maintenance company. They will tell you whether the oil needs to be changed depending on the condition of the installation.
